Reading Intent

At St Anthony’s, reading is a priority in the English Curriculum. We endeavour to provide all children with essential skills required to be fluent and confident readers which will allow them to enjoy and successfully comprehend a wide range of texts. At St Anthony’s we foster a passion of love for books and encourage the children to develop a love of reading for pleasure, a good knowledge of a range of authors and to be able to understand more about the world in which they love through the knowledge they gain from texts.

Throughout St Anthony’s, reading is valued and promoted throughout the school to be an enjoyable activity and essential life skill. By the end of their time at St Anthony’s, all children should be able to read fluently, and with confidence in any subject and for any reason. We do not hold any pre conceptions about children’s ability and believe all children have the ability to achieve to the highest of standards at St Anthony’s.

Phonics Intent

At St. Anthony’s we believe that phonics provides the very foundations of learning to read and write successfully.  Through phonics children learn to segment words to support their spelling ability and blend sounds to read words.  At St. Anthony’s we teach phonics using the Read, Write Inc scheme, a DFE approved scheme which teaches reading and writing together.  The teaching of phonics is of high priority and we are passionate about ensuring all children become confident and enthusiastic readers and writers.

Writing Intent:

At St. Anthony’s Catholic Primary School, we strive to help our children develop into articulate and imaginative communicators, who are well-equipped with the basic skills they need to become life-long learners; writing is key in this.

We aim to ensure all of our children develop a genuine love of language and the written word, through a text-based approach. Careful links are made across the curriculum to ensure that children’s English learning is relevant and meaningful: where possible linking our reading, writing and the topic that we are covering in History, Geography and Science. We ensure that children develop an understanding of how widely writing is used in everyday life and, therefore, how important and useful the skills are that they are learning. Our intentions in writing are for children to:

  • Write for a purpose
  • See themselves as real writers
  • Take ownership of their writing
  • See writing as an interesting and enjoyable process
  • Acquire the ability to organise, plan and publish their written work
