Art intent, implementation and impact statement

St Anthony’s Intent, Implementation and Impact statement for Art.

Intent

Faith and Spirituality: Our faith at St Anthony’s is a central part of our school. Art is used to express spirituality, reflect on artwork, and share their interpretations.

Knowledge and Experiences: At St. Anthony’s we strive to equip children with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft, and design. We plan our art lessons around the topics being taught, always trying to build on the knowledge.

Resilience: At St Anthony’s, children are encouraged to enjoy art and try their best. Sketchbooks are used to develop and master skills, until children feel confident with producing their artwork. Art is also used as a nurture and well-being activity.

Our intention in Art and Design is to stimulate creativity and imagination, whilst engaging, inspiring, and challenging our pupils. Through high quality art and design lessons, our pupils will learn the specific knowledge and skills for them to experiment, invent and create their own works of art and design. We want our pupils to find enjoyment in art and creativity, as well as develop an appreciation for the work of a range of artists. At St. Anthony’s we enrich the children’s leaning by inviting outside agencies, to share and demonstrate their knowledge and skills with our pupils. We encourage our pupils to use a range of techniques and materials confidently and skillfully. Children at St. Anthony’s are encouraged to create for a purpose through entry to a range of competitions such as the BCWCAT Art exhibition, Christmas card competition and many more.

Implementation

Our art and design curriculum provides a clear and comprehensive scheme of work that will show progression of skills across KS1 and KS2. The children are given an opportunity to present their sense of vision through observation, experimentation, and illustration. Pupils are encouraged to use their imagination through a wide variety of media and manipulative skills are developed. Sketch books are used frequently as a place for pupils to experiment, develop their skills and try out new techniques.  Children will have access to teachers with appropriate subject knowledge to model and inspire them to use a range of techniques and materials to create personal pieces of imaginative artwork. Art lessons are linked to the wider curriculum, linking to topics taught throughout the year. Pupils are also taught about great male and female artists, sculptors of history and now. Art and design are taught to classes in weekly lessons, 3-4 lessons every half term. Every class also has an opportunity to learn art skills from a specialist art teacher once a year.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS & DISABILITIES (SEND)

Children with SEND are encouraged and expected to take part when and where possible. Tasks are differentiated for them to enable them to participate in the lessons.

On some occasions they might work with an adult supporting them or work collaboratively with others.

Intended Impact

  • Pupils will enjoy art as a tool to access the curriculum breadth, and for well-being activities
  • Pupils will be able to use a variety of mediums and skills
  • Pupils will be exposed to a variety of historical and contemporary artists and styles
  • Art will help pupils be proud of their achievement and develop self-confidence
  • Exhibit pupil work at the BCWCAT exhibition at the end of the year
  • Pupils will make good progress in art

Design and Technology intent, implementation and impact statement

St Anthony’s Intent, Implementation and Impact statement for Design and Technology.

Intent

Faith and Spirituality: Our faith at St Anthony’s is an important part of our school. DT is used to express their creativity and freedom of thought.

Knowledge and Experiences: At St. Anthony’s we endeavor to equip children with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own design to create their own product.

Resilience: At St Anthony’s, children are encouraged to enjoy design and technology lessons and try their best. Curriculum books are used to develop skills and designs, until children feel confident with producing their work.

At St Anthony’s we provide opportunities and support children to develop skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, and a wide variety of materials, including food. Our focus on food technology promotes healthy eating and recognising what our bodies need to stay healthy. We then provide opportunities for our children to experiment, make and taste healthy food.

At each stage of learning, children will be able to build on previous skills learnt and develop the creative, technical, and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and successfully. St Anthony’s will do this by creating opportunities for pupils to develop their ideas, supporting, and challenging them along the way.

Implementation

This is implemented through:

  • A well thought out, whole school, yearly overview of the DT curriculum which allows for progression across year groups in all areas of DT (textiles, mechanisms, structures, food and electrical systems)
  • Well planned and resourced projects providing children with a hands-on and enriching experience
  • A range of skills being taught ensuring that children are aware of health and safety issues related to the tasks undertaken
  • Teachers being given ownership and flexibility to plan for Design and Technology; often teaching DT as a block of 3-4 lessons a term to allow the time needed for the children to be critical, inventive and reflective on their work.
  • Each project from Year 1 to Year 6 addressing the principles of designing, making, and evaluating and incorporating relevant technical knowledge and understanding in relevant contexts.
  • Pupils being introduced to specific designers, chefs, nutritionists, etc. helping to engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement and increase the cultural capital from which they can draw in the future.

  • Children will have clear enjoyment and confidence in Design and Technology that they will then apply to other areas of the curriculum.
  • Through carefully planned and implemented learning activities the pupils develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. They gain a firm foundation of knowledge and skills to see them equipped to take on further learning in High School.
  • Pupil’s skills and knowledge are assessed ongoingly by the class teacher, throughout lessons and a summative assessment is completed termly. This informs the Design and Technology coordinator of any further areas for curriculum development, pupil support and/or training requirements for staff.
